These coloured pencil drawings on black paper were done as part of sketching workshops to improve technique. The use of black paper was an experiment arising from my preference for drawing in coloured pencils.

Banggaada - the hairy nosed Wombat - is most active between dusk and dawn when he emerges from his underground burrow to graze on native grasses and other vegetation.

As a night time animal, I really wanted a sketch that would reflect low light with moon or torch light highlights. I wanted the fur texture to be crisp without losing shadows.

Banggaada - like his people - was a very slow, calm drawing process with firm technical parameters that I really enjoyed.

Bobcat was a much more challenging sketch as part of an exercise in expressing complex animal fur patterns.

Far from random spots, the beautiful dotted patterns of the Bobcat are arranged in a series of stripes that make it a technical process to draw.

The choice of black paper really helped with this by allowing more room to correct the coat in lighter colours that are easier to darken instead of trying to manage the complexity in bold, dark colours that are challenging to lighten.
